RMOF: Liz Edgerton

October 2006

I am a 43 year-old Type 1 diabetic and mother of three children, ages 16, 14 and 9. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my second pregnancy and became a juvenile diabetic after delivery. I have been completely dependent on either multiple daily injections of insulin or insulin pumps for the past 14 years. After my third child was born, I gained 40 pounds due to depression and poor eating habits. This made it impossible to control the diabetes and my mental and physical health suffered tremendously.

One year ago, I walked into Mind & Body Fitness and little did I know my life was about to change in very positive ways. I began weight training with John Henry. In the months that followed, he taught me that fat loss and getting fit is a process that begins with focusing on your muscles, not just through weight training, but also eating. After I was effectively using the weights in my workouts, John Henry and I started talking about nutrition. I committed to practicing good nutrition at least on or two days per week. Eventually, I was ready to commit to a nutrition plan that consisted of eating more protein, good carbohydrates, veggies and lots of water, seven days a week.

After one year of practicing the process of becoming fit and burning body fat, I have now lost 35 pounds of body fat and weigh 145 pounds! I've gone from a size 16 to a size 8 and reduced the amount of insulin I inject by 40%, which is rare in the diabetic community! Furthermore, I no longer suffer from the dramatic highs and lows in my blood sugar that zapped my energy and fueled my appetite and depression. I doubt I would ever have achieved my current level of fitness without the education and coaching I have received from John Henry. My metabolism is now running very efficiently, my diabetes is under control and losing that body fat and maintaining that loss has never been so easy!
