RMOF: Betty Woody

November 2005

I am 88 years old and the proud mother of three, grandmother of six and great-grandmother of seven. I have previously exercised doing water aerobics and walking. I have osteoarthritis in most of my joints, but I was feeling the most discomfort in my shoulders. I could not lift my arms over my head without pain. My balance had also gotten worse and I had to be careful when sitting and standing from a chair.

At the urging of my kids, I came to Mind & Body Fitness to get stronger and more flexible. Up until this summer, I hadn't lifted weights before. Within a week, my shoulders barely hurt and I could lift them high over my head, which I haven't been able to do in years. I work out twice a week at MBF. My sessions consist of active-isolated stretching for all my joints, strength training for my arms and legs and balance exercises so I am not as "wobbly". It is a rare occasion that I notice my shoulders now and my balance is definitely better, too. If I can do this at my age, then anyone can!
