April 2006

About five years ago, my doctor told me I had osteoporosis and my cholesterol was way too high. As if that weren't enough, while waiting for friends in a restaurant, my husband told me, "Do not wave", when he saw the skin dangling from my upper arm. Not sure whether to send my picture into Extreme Makeover or begin a regiment of milk and calcium for the osteoporosis, a friend asked me to join her for a workout session with John Henry Creel at Mind & Body Fitness. Little did I know it would change my life....

Before meeting John Henry, I thought a diet was starving myself and exercise was endless hours on the treadmill. I couldn't have been more wrong! John Henry explained that resistance training was the key- it was just what my bones needed, my muscles would be strengthened and my body fat would decrease causing the look of my whole body (my arms?) to improve. So I started resistance training. While I was doing this, the nutrition plan he gave me was really a surprise. I was eating so much! I was never hungry and, over time, I actually changed my desires in eating. A great meal became a grilled chicken breast, crispy broccoli and a sizzling sweet potato. My favorite snacks became a protein bar or shake and I actually learned to look forward to my morning oatmeal. This was not a temporary diet, but a way I could actually live my life happily and healthy.

May 2006 marks my five year anniversary with John Henry. I am happy to say, I no longer have osteoporosis (really!) and my cholesterol is below 200. My arms look pretty good to me (my husband says I can wave again) and when my daughter got married, the dress I wore was a size 2 and pretty sexy for a 57 year-old mother of the bride! I also have more energy, less stress and a whole new outlook on my life. Every week I am still learning new things and do new things that I never thought I could. Thank you John Henry. My training with you will always be a great part of my life.

Great arms Betsy!Betsy: Size 2 mother-of-the-bride!
